Definition
A medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein
Aetiology/ causes
Anything that prevents the blood flowing or properly clotting can cause a blood clot
Main causes:
Damage to a vein from surgery
Inflammation and damage to infection or injury
Risk factors
Lack of movement
Injury or surgery
Pregnancy
Birth control pills
Hormone replacement surgery
Being overweight or obese
Smoking
Cancer
Epidemiology/ Population affected
Annual incidence is about 1 per 1000 adults of the general population
Age (60+)
Clinical presentation
Tenderness
Warmth
Erythema
Cyanosis
Palpable cord
Oedema
Superficial venous dilation
Prognosis
Many DVTs will resolve with no complications
Risk of recurrence is up to 25%
Death results in approx. 6%
