A

G1 - Can drive if able to safely, need to notify DVLA (maybe hold off til spoken to them)

G2 - Need to notfuy and likely can’t drive

A

ALWAYS need to notify DVLA for relevant conditions

Most things disqualified, can drive if diabetic on insulin/ gliclazide, stable angina/ asymptomatic HF but discuss with them

Diabetes G1 - DVLA rules

A

Insulin/ gliclazide/ hypos - Tell DVLA if insulin or severe hypo or hypo unawareness
- Need to do blood sugar checking within 2 hours before driving and every 2 hours

If severe hypo - have to stop and re-apply 3 months later

If diet/ other meds - don’t need to inform

A

Insulin/ gliclazide - Lots of checking rules and need to show evidence, if ever hypo can’t drive
MUST tell DVLA

Need to tell DVLA if on ANY other medication but can drive usually

DON’T need to inform if diet and exercise alone

A

Group 1: Only inform if insulin/ glicla/ hypo’s

Group 2: Inform if ANY meds, including metformin

Need to inform if severe depression, mania or pychosis

G2: Need to inform, usually disqualified

A

G1: If when standing and avoidable trigger then can drive and not notify
- Otherwise notify DVLA, if unexplained or unable to avoid cause don’t drive

G2: Notify DVLA and don’t drive

A

G1: If <6cm can drive and don’t need to notify DVLA
<6.5cm May drive but must notify DVLA
- Otherwise don’t drive

G2: If <5.5cm can drive and MUST notify DVLA

A

Legal standard G1 is snellen 6/12 in both eyes with normal visual fields

Anything else or G2 then notify DVLA and don’t drive

A

Both notify DVLA and stop driving

G1: 6 months off if substance misuse, 1 year off if dependant
G2: Longer

Pacemaker - 1 week off, notify DVLA
G2: 6wks off then review

ICD
G1 - Don’t drive for 6 months, notify DVLA

Epilepsy - general DVLA rules?

A

All notify DVLA
G2- Notify DVLA, they advise

G1- First seizure - wait 6months before reapply
Epilepsy - 1 year seizure free
Meds change - Stop driving when medication reduced and for then 6 months with dose change/ stopped

Arrythmia (i.e. AF) - DVLA guidance?

A

Don’t drive if lively to cause incapacity (syncope/ pre-syncope etc)
- May include fast AF

G1 - Only inform DVLA if cause not known or uncontrolled for >4wks - otherwise can drive again when controlled 4ks

G2- Inform DVLA, may be able to drive if 3 months free of symptoms
