  • Diet controlled
  • Tablets with no risk of hypoglycaemia
  • Non-insulin injectable medication that carries no risk of hypoglycaemia (Exenatide etc)

  • If they are on insulin
  • If they are on tablets that can cause hypoglycaemia (Sulphonylureas and Glinides (a.k.a. Meglitinides).

What requirements need to be met by diabetics using insulin or hypoglycaemic before they can have a Group 1 licence?

A
  1. No hypoglycemic episode in the last 12 months requiring someone to assist them.
  2. For insulin users only:
    • They need to demonstrate full hypoglycaemic awareness.
    • No visual impairment or complications that affect driving ability.

What standards need to be met before a diabetic (insulin or hypoglycaemic tablets) can drive an HGV (Group 2 Licence)?

A
  1. No severe hypoglycemic episode in the last 12 months.
  2. The driver has “full hypoglycemia awareness”
  3. Must show full control and monitor regularly. (At least 2 times daily)
    • 3 months of recorded levels before application.
  4. They are aware of the consequences/risks of hypoglyaemic
  5. No other debarring complications of diabetes.

  2. They will also be required to produce a D4 medical form.
