Every DV incident has the potential to become what?
Homicide
Great bodily injury
Injury that causes substantial risk of death or disfigurement
Moderate bodily injury
Injury that involves prolonged loss of consciousness or temporary disfigurement
When reporting a DV incident to dispatch, the officer should include?
Location; number of people; initial observations; a back up unit
Gathering information is needed for 2 reasons
Officer safety and initiation of investigation
Procedures upon arrival to a DV incident
Park a short distance away from location; turn off vehicle lights at night; wait for backup to arrive; activate body and car cameras
Law enforcement Reaponsibilities
Separate persons; assess injuries; attempt to get written statement; observe 360 degrees
Appropriate interview techniques
Avoid close-ended questions or leading questions;
Interviewing a victim
Build rapport; assure hem you’re here to help
Interviewing suspect
Wants to tell their side; often will try to shift blame; challenge inconsistencies
Interviewing children
Last resort; get on child’s level mentally and physically;
Documenting DV incident
Written statements from everyone involved; write report like a story
Strangulation
Only indicators are internal; 4.5lbs on jugular and 11 lbs on carotid artery to become unconscious; 33 lbs on trachea to close
If a woman survives strangulation once….
She is 700% likely to be strangled again; 800% likely to be killed at a later date
When Documenting photos…
Start with overview; then midrange; finish with closeups to compare wound size
