Dutton and Aron Flashcards
Thematic Apperception Test, or TAT
A projective test that involves describing ambiguous scenes to learn more about a person’s emotions, motivations, and personality
Sexual-Aggression link
- Barclay and Haber (1965): Berating students for having done poorly on tests.
- Fraternity and sorority members angered by a female experimenter
- Clarck 1952: viewing slides of nudes yielded increased aggression
in TAT responses
Arons arguments
A more general sexual attraction and emotional arousal connection exists. Residual feelings from intense role-playing (40 males) resulted in more desire to kiss the confederate and included more sexual imagery written in respone to TAT.
Schachter and Singer theory
He argued that environmental cues are used, in certain circumstances, to provide emotional labels for unexplained or ambiguous states of arousal.
Aron’s hypothesis (1970)
Strong emotions are relabeled as sexual attraction whenever an acceptable object is present and emotion-producing circumstances do not require the full
attention of the individual.
Notion to be proven
An attractive female is seen as more attractive in a situation where they experience strong emotion.
