The higher the number is, the better you are at all things related to that ability and vice versa.

A specific number decided by your ability score that you add/substract to each roll you perform with that ability

(eg: if my ability score in strength is 18, my ability score modifier is +3. So, any results I do that relate to strength is the number of what I rolled + 3)
