Character Creation Flashcards
What are the two primary aspects that impact a character’s abilities and niches?
Race and Class
What are the six abilities every character has?
Strength
Dexterity
Constitution
Intelligence
Wisdom
Charisma
What is an ability score?
An ability score is a number given to each ability to determine how good they are in all things related to that ability
What is an ability score modifier?
A number determined by the ability score modifier that add/substracts to your total results when rolling
Name and explain at least one from the three ways one can distribute ability scores?
Standard array (pre-determined scores given to the player)
Dice roll (Roll 4 six sided dice and discard the lowest number, then add the three remaining numbers. Repeat for each ability)
27 point buy (Start with all abilities having an ability score of 8, then individually add as much as you want for each ability until you have expended 27 points across all abilities)
What is a skill?
A specific expertise you have on certain situations that one can determine from ability scores
What is a skill proficiency?
A small bonus you can add to skill rolls
What is an ability or skill check?
A roll a player must do to determine the success or failure of an intended action. Every action must connect to either an ability or skill
What is a saving throw?
A roll a player must roll to determine if they successfully avoided any incoming threat. Saving throws must be connected to a specific skill
What dice does someone use to determine the result of Skill/Ability checks and saving throws?
a d20 (20 sided die)
what are hit points?
the amount of damage a character can take before being incapacitated
Define and explain Death Saving Throws
A set of rolls a player does to determine if they live or die once incapacitated.
Rolling at 10 or above is a success and rolling 9 or below is a fail. If the players rolls 3 consecutive successes, the character lives, but if they fail 3 consecutive times they die
How do the results of dice impact the actions of a player? Include Natural 20s and Natural 1s in your answer
When performing an action, the player must have a total result higher than that of the DM’s choice to successfully achieve that action. Anything below that is a failure to perform said action.
The higher you roll the better you do, the lower you roll the worse you do. If the player rolls a 20 (which is the highest possible result from a die without modifiers) The best possible result of that action will happen. The opposite happens if you roll a natural 1.
What is an attack roll?
An attack roll is a roll a player or NPC (Non-player character) performs to deal damage to a certain target. The total result must be a preset number or higher to successfully hit the target
What is the difference between an attack roll or a damage roll?
An attack roll decides if the attacker actually hits the target or not.
A damage roll is how much damage the target recieves should the attack roll be successful
