Dumping Syndrome vs. Hiatal Hernia Flashcards
What is HIATAL HERNIA?
The REGURGITATION of ACID that BACKS UP into the ESOPHAGUS
- because upper stomach herniates upward towards the Diaphragm
What is the PROBLEM in HIATAL HERNIA?
Gastric Content MOVES in the WRONG DIRECTION at the CORRECT RATE (Rate is Normal)
What is DUMPING SYNDROME?
COMPLICATION that follows after GASTRIC SURGERY in which Gastric Content DUMP TOO QUICKLY into the DUODENUM.
What is the PROBLEM in DUMPING SYNDROME?
Gastric Content moves in the RIGHT DIRECTION at a WRONG RATE.
What are the S/SX of HIATAL HERNIA?
G.E.R.D. (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease) = Heartburn & Indigestion happens if you LIE DOWN AFTER YOU EAT

HIGH FLUIDS
What do you want to give with the CARBOHYDRATES content in HIATAL HERNIA?
HIGH CARBOHYDRATES
How do DUMPING SYNDROME eat their MEALS?
IN LOW POSITION (opposite of Hiatal Hernia)

LOW “When everything is Low the stomach empty Slow”
How do you give CHON in HIATAL HERNIA?
LOW PROTEIN “When CHO is High, CHON is Low”
How do you give PROTEIN in DUMPING SYNDROME?
HIGH PROTEIN “When CHO is Low, CHON is High”
