Stage 2 - Dyadic phase
Focus is on interpersonal processes between 2 partners
Come to point where they cannot avoid talking about rel any longer
Series of confrontations where rel is discussed and dissatisfactions r aired
Characteristic by anxiety, hostility + complains about lack of equity, resentment over imbalances roles
What r the 2 possible outcomes of dyadic phase
Determination to continue breaking up rel ( self-disclosure is deeper here ad partner express thoughts and eelikgs tube been withholding in intra psychic phase)
A renewed desire to repair it
Stage 3 - the social phase
Focus is on wider processes involving couples social networks
Break up is made public + partners will seek support
Mutual friends r expected to choose a side - also gossip
Some provide reassurance + reinforcement such as ‘i knew u were too good for him’
Some may provide secret info they didn’t tell beige
Some may try and repair
Stage 4 - the grace dressing phase
Focus = aftermath
Rel = dead and times to bury it
Favorable story for public consumption
Allowing partyners to maintain pos reputation, each tries to gain social credit by blaming
Traits they liked they wont like now
Get new lives and have a personal story

There r different strategies which r fit for diff phases e.g intra psychic phase it is useful yo try get dissat partner to notice positive aspects of other partner whereas in the social phase help from couples social networks can be sought
These recommendations r useful as offer targeted strategies at diff stages so specific sessions can improve outcomes
So model has sig influence in counselling
Lim - ethical (protection from harm)
Involves ethically sensitive research as involves reminding individuals of the stressful and emotional times involved in their relationship breakup which likely caused them pain
Makes it difficult doe psychologist to ensure they protect patients from psychological harm
Lim - culture bias
Dont consider collectivist cultures as model is based on western cultures
Collectivist cultures largely involve oblig relationships which are less easy to end than individualist as may consist of voluntary relations
Important as means its unlikely the process will be same for both cultures
Strength- validity
Model has good face validity
Many couples have reported experiencing these phases when relationships have not worked and come to an end
