Stage 1 description (high fluctuating).
Both BR and DR are high and fluctuate.
Stage 1 BR.
High. Reasons: •High IMR so people have more children so some survive. •Children needed to work on land •Sign of virility •Religion: Catholicism, Islamic, Hindu. •Lack of birth control
Stage 1 DR.
High.
Reasons:
•Lack of Food Security poor diet + shortages
•Poor hygiene: no piped, clean water or sewage disposal
•Disease: cholera, kwashiorkor
•Very little medical science.
Stage 2 description (early expanding).
BR remain high. DR fall rapidly so population grows rapidly
Stage 2 BR.
Remain high.
Reasons:
Same as before.
Stage 2 DR.
Starts to fall.
Reasons:
•Improvements in food production & access to food: quantity & quality
•Decrease in IMR
•Improved sanitation and water supply
•Improved transport to move food, doctors
•Improved medical care
Stage 3 description (late expanding).
BR fall rapidly. DR continue to fall slightly. Population increases but a slower rate.
Stage 3 BR.
Fall.
Reasons:
•Lower IMR so less pressure to have children.
•Industrialization & mechanization so less need for farm workers.
•Cost of children – impact on lifestyle.
•Family planning & contraception.
Stage 3 DR.
Continue to fall.
Reasons:
As before.
Stage 4 description (low fluctuating).
BR and DR are low and fluctuating.
Stage 4 BR.
Fluctuate.
Reasons:
•Trends and fashions.
•Pro-fatalist policies.
Stage 4 DR.
Low.
Reasons:
As before.
Stage 5 description (decline).
DR may rise slightly so population may decrease.
Stage 5 BR.
Fluctuate.
Reasons:
•Trends and fashions.
•Pro-fatalist policies.
Stage 5 DR.
May increase slightly.
Reasons:
•Increasingly ageing population.
•Other killers e.g. Cancer, heart disease and lifestyle.
