Reasons: 
•High IMR so people have more children so some survive.
•Children needed to work on land
•Sign of virility
•Religion: Catholicism, Islamic, Hindu.
•Lack of birth control

Advantages of DTM.

A
  • Useful to describe population change over time.
  • It can be applied to countries all over the world.
  • It provides a starting point for the study of demographic change over time.
  • Its timescales are flexible.
  • It is easy to understand.
  • Enables comparisons to be made between countries.
  • A lot of countries have followed the model.

Disadvantages of DTM.

A
  • It is not good as a perspective model.
  • It is Eurocentric.
  • Some NICs have gone through similar phases but at a faster rate.
  • Less evidence that African countries will follow this pattern.
  • Stage 5 was added.
  • Does not include: role of governments, migration and religious influences.
