DTE Actual Examination. Flashcards

1
Q

What are two benefits of using lamination to produce the curved beam?

A

The beams will be very strong, so can withstand large amounts of compressive force, whereas the timber can not.

There is less material wasted when it is laminated, otherwise would be cut away to make the beam.

2
Q

Why is PVA suitable for this purpose?

A

PVA does not dry immediately so there is time to correct the orientation of laminates
PVA dries clear so it maintains the aesthetic appeal for the beams.

Q

How do you set up a CNC?

A

Design something using a CAD Package
Using a post processor package, import design to the machine.
Switch machine on.
Set the parameters on the machine.
This includes thickness, length and width of material.
Speed and Feed Rate.
Find a datum point.
Perform a test run, to check path of tool.
Put material in.
Systems on!
Quality Control.

Q

Why is Oak a good choice for the base?

A

Oak is an incredibly strong hardwood and is therefore unlikely to split.
Oak is also very hard and will not therefore scratch or dent which would ruin the game
Oak is a very heavy wood, so the game will stay still when people are moving peices

Q

Why is rotational moulding the game a better idea?

A

The game would be hollow and therefore lighter and easier to manoeuvre.
It uses less material as the game is hollow, reducing the cost of material.
There are no sprues or runners present, so no secondary processing needs to be done to ensure the product has a smooth finish.

Q

Explain the two advantages of milling the aluminium component from a solid piece of material.

A

No need for extra process to join them which would take more time. Welding.
The component is stronger as there is no weak joint.

Q

What are the advantages of making it from two pieces?

A

Less wasted material that had to be cut away

The two parts can be made separately, which decreases the time to make them.

Q

What are the advantages of anodising rather than painting?

A

Anodising is very long lasting and does not flake so does not need a recoating like paint does.
It is more scratch resistant than painting at it penetrates into the surface.
Fully covers every surface as anodising fluids go inside the holes.

Q

Why is Lego a good material for kids

A

It is non toxic and inert so kids can put it in their mouths.
It is scratch resistant , so from a hygiene point of view no bacteria can build up in the scratches.
It is very mouldable so it is suitable for injection moulding.

Q

Why is die casting used to create these key ring things?

A

It is a rapid process so a large number can be made very quickly.
The die can be reused and a high quality surface finish can be acquired.

Q

How were the designers in Arts and Crafts influenced.

A

One of William Morris’ main aim was to create products in which form followed function. They therefore were inspired to create designs which were very simplistic and served a clear purpose. Designers were influenced to create products that were affordable or the public, and had minimal decoration, yet the products were made to a very high standard. Natural materials were often used. Often patterns in nature were seen in this design. We’re against industrially produced designs .
High quality.

Q

How does the chair follow the form follows function?

A

The chair is incredible comfy so puts the well-being of the user in front of what the chair looks like.
The base of the chair is relatively large so that the chair will not rock.
