During descent when does critical phase of flight begin and what does this time mean to you? 2.1.43
Below 10 000 ft. Defined by double chime. Communication with flight crew restricted to urgent operational and safety matters.
EXPAND AND EXPLAIN each line of decompression drill. (CSM 4.11.1-5 / 772 & 773 5.2.7-8 / 5.12.1-3 / 5.13.6)
● Confirm that flight crew are wearing their oxygen masks—ask: o2 Indications: ● 10 000 ft - flight deck audible and visual warnings ● 13 500 - 14 000 ft - masks drop. Cabin Crew Actions Immediate Actions –Actions All FAs Fit nearest Oxygen Mask ● Pull mask towards face to release the pin and to initiate oxygen flow ● Some aircraft has red “PULL” streamers deploy to overcome reach issues ● Crew located in horizontal rest areas need to grab oxygen mask that pops out of the PSU compartment located either side or behind the head ● Prior to entering crew rest crew should have taken note where the PSU compartment is located Face Aft ● Crew caught in cabin should steady themselves and face aft ● Brace against aircraft descent angle ● Near a crew seat – fit mask and fasten harness ● Empty seat available – sit down and fasten seatbelt. ● Empty seat not available – drop down on one knee and hold onto armrest ● Stay secure until aircraft levels at a safer cruising altitude ● Emergency descent timing may vary from 3-5mins Check Oxygen is Flowing ● Green band at the base of the mask rebreather bag or ● Green in-line flow indicator in the transparent oxygen tubing ● Green LED indicator on the overhead panel ● Rebreather bag may not inflate (all fleets except 787) Subsequent Actions Transfer to a Portable O2 Bottle if Safe to do so ● Should only be done where the alternative portable oxygen supply is immediately available and does not require the cabin crew to come off oxygen ● Crew member should be able to access the portable oxygen whilst wearing the mask attached to the fixed oxygen system ● Secure portable oxygen bottle to your person with carrying strap ● Turn oxygen ON and check oxygen is flowing to that mask then quickly remove the mask from the fixed system and put on and secure the mask from the portable system If no O2 Bottle Within Reach Wait Until One is Brought to You ● Remain where you are until portable oxygen is brought to you ● Do not attempt to come off oxygen to reach a portable bottle FA1 Check Flight Crew Oxygen ON ● FA1 notify flight crew of the cabin oxygen mask deployment masks are dropped in the cabin, are your marks on? Assist Immobilized Crew ● Crew that have transferred onto portable oxygen should distribute portable oxygen bottles to those crew members who are immobilized Check Passengers and Toilets ● Check toilets to ensure nobody requires assistance ● Smoke detectors may false alarm – liaise with flight deck if required Listen for PA(s) From Flight Crew ● Listen to PA - Listening to see if we we end to remain on oxygen or not ● Crew must be prepared to act without instruction depending on the situation ● Report to FA1 ● Report to FA1 on the status of the crew, passengers and their cabin area FA1 Report to Captain ● Report to captain any information received by cabin crew ● This could possibly best be achieved by using the interphone as pilots are likely to still be wearing oxygen masks ● PIC will brief FA1 of the current altitude and intentions
