DSF Skeletal Flashcards
Alveolus
A tooth socket
Articulation
An area where adj bones are in contact (via cartilage or fibrous tissue) at a joint
Boss
A smooth, round, broad eminence
Canal
A tunnel-like passage, usually extending from a foramen
Canaliculus
A very small passage or duct
Ex: W/in compact bone, osteocytes are locally interconnected via a network of canaliculi
Capitulum
A small, round, articular head
Ex: the capitulum of the humerus articulates w/ the head of the radius
Condyle
A rounded articular process
Ex: the occipital condyles lie on the base of the cranium & articular w/ the uppermost vertebra, the atlas
Crest
A prominent, usually sharp & thin ridge of bone; often formed b/w adj muscle masses
Eminence
A bony projection; usually not as prominent as a process
Epicondyle
A non-articular projection adj to a condyle
Epiphysis
In general usage, usually the end portion of extremity of a long bone that is expanded for articulation
Facet
A small articular surface on a bone, or a tooth-to-tooth contact
Foramen
An opening through a bone, usually a passage for vessels & nerves
Fossa
A depressed area, usually broad & shallow
Fovea
A pit-like, depressed area; usually smaller than a fossa
Hamulus
A hook-shaped projection
Meatus
A short, wide canal
Process
A bony prominence
Ramus
A branch
Ex: the pubic bone splits into 2 rami around the obturator foramen
Neck
The section of a bone b/w the head & the shaft
Sinus
A cavity w/in a cranial bone
Sulcus
A long, wide groove
Torus
A bony thickening
Trochanter
1 of 2 large, prominent, blunt, rugose processes found only in the femur
Trochlea
A spool-like articular process or process that acts as a pulley
Ex: the trochlea of the humerus articulates w/ the trochlear notch of the ulna
Tubercle
A small, usually rugose eminence; often a site of tendon or ligament attachment
Tuberosity
A large, usually rugose (roughened) eminence of variable shape; often a site of tendon or ligament attachment
Costal cartilage
Provides flexibility
Present in ribs & ribs
