DSF Nervous System Flashcards
Nerve fiber
individual axon of a nerve cell
Nerve
bundles of axons in the PNS
Tract
bundles of axons in the CNS
Ganglion
a collection of neuron cell bodies in the PNS
Nucleus
a collection of neuron cell bodies in the CNS
Gray matter
area of the CNS primarily containing neuronal cell bodies
White matter
area of the CNS containing primarily axons
Oligodendrocytes
glial cells (non-neuronal) of CNS:
support, nourish, insulate
involved in myelination
Cranial nerves
12 pairs primarily innervate head & neck (10 also thorax & abd) all are somatic nerves some (3, 9, 10) contain autonomic
Anterior (ventral) ramus
Innervates the muscles of the anterior & lateral trunk, upper & lower limbs & overlying skin
Stay as separate nerves to innervate trunk (intercostal nerves)
Form plexuses to supply limbs)
Posterior (dorsal) ramus
Innervates joints of the vertebral column, deep muscles of the back, & overlying skin
Stay as separate nerves
Anterior rami of spinal nerves
Cervical plexus (C1-C4) Brachial plexus (C5-T1) Intercostal nerves (T1-T12) Lumbar plexus (T12-L4) Sacral plexus (L4-S3)
Cervical plexus
Anterior rami
C1-C4
Innervates muscles & skin of the neck & posterior scalp
Brachial plexus
Anterior rami
(C5-T1)
Innervates muscles & skin of the upper limb
Intercostal nerves
Anterior rami
(T1-T12)
Innervates muscles & skin of the anterior & lateral thoracic & abd walls
