physicians can practice acupuncture in most states w/o formal certification
What is acupuncture?
combo of traditional thought of encouraging flow of qi mixed w/ modern thought of recruiting neuroanatomical activities in segment
What is acupuncture used for?
nausea, pain, HA, allergies, menstrual cramps, OA
What is the neuro-anatomical basis of acupuncture tx?
needle stimulates neuro-chemical response where body releases mediators of healing (MOs, substance P) as fascia grabs on to solid needle
What is yoga and its ultimate goal?
a group of physical, mental, spiritual practices that is a lifestyle change
ultimate goal is moksha (liberation)
What is the Feldenkrais type of yoga?
uses gentle movement & directed attention to help people learn new & more effective ways of living w/ their bodies
When is yoga prescribed?
for hypertonicitiy issues, scoliotic issues
What is a speech language pathologist?
SLPs work to prevent, assess, diagnose & treat language, social communication, cognitive-communication & swallowing disorders in children & adults
What is the education requirement for SLPs?
SLP is 2yr master’s degree
Clinic DR is 2yr program after master’s degree
Where do SLPs practice?
in patient, outpatient therapy & in schools
Why would you refer to an SLP?
disorders w/ speech, language, social communication, cognitive communication, swallowing
What is occupational therapy?
OTPs have holistic perspective in which focus is on adapting the enviro or task to fit the person & the person is an integral part of the therapy team
What are the education requirements for OT?
OTR is master’s degree
OTD is 2-3 yr program
