What organisations did the Nazis use to control the German people?
-SS: led by Himmler, formed in 1925, grew into large organisation with many subdivisions (e.g: Waffen-SS (elite armoured regiments), Deaths Head Units (conc. camps and Jews))
-Gestapo: secret state police, led by Heydrich, powers to arrest people and send them to conc. camps without trial or explanation
-Police and Courts: top police jobs given to high-ranking Nazis, reporting to Himmler, instructions given to ignore Nazi crimes, Nazis controlled magistrates and judges, opponents of Nazism don’t receive fair trials
-Conc. camps: for Jews, Socialists, Communists, TUists, churchmen and critics of Nazis, usually in rural areas, ran by DH units, hard labour, limited food, harsh discipline, beatings, executions, deaths increasingly common from late 1930s
