why did the Munich putsch occur
- there was discontent in Germany due to the hyperinflation crisis and the fact that Stresemann had just called off passive resistance in the Ruhr and had begun to repay the reparations from the T.o.V.
- Hitler wanted to destroy Weimar and believed this was an opportune time to do it as they were preocuppied
what happened in the Munich putsch
on 8th November 1923, von Kahr called a meeting of the Bavarian state officials and the SA surrounded the hall where it was taking place. Hitler `ambushed the meeting and declared he was taking over the bavarian government
- the next day he along with 3000 soldiers and Ludendorff marched through the streets of Munich to gain public support
- armed police arrived at the scene and 16 nazis were killed along with Hitler and other leaders being arrested
why was the Munich putsch a failure in the short term
he had completely overestimated the support he was going to get and miscalculated the moods of the German people. he along with other nazi leaders were arrested for treason
why was the Munich putsch a success in the long term
his trial attracted a mass amount of publicity and he was able to express his ideas to Germany because his every word was accounted for by the meida he was served a short sentence of five years and was only required to serve 9 months of those five years
within these nine months, he was able to write Mein Kampf which outlined his ideologies
he also became aware of the fact he could not achieve power by force, instead, he had to do it via the political system

Describe how Hitler used propaganda to consolidate his power
Nuremberg rallies- Took place in the summer each year, there were bands, marches, flying displays and hitlers brilliant speeches-gave people a sense of belonging
What was the reichstag fire
The Reichstag building was destroyed and Hitler used the fire to intensify anti-communist hysteria
4,000 leading communists were arrested and imprisoned and thus removed a threat
To increase Nazi control Hitler persuaded Hindenburg to pass an emergency decree suspending all articles in the constitution which guaranteed personal Liberty and freedom of speech
Gave Hitler power to search houses, confiscate property and detain people without trial
Nazis hates reichstag as it was symbol of Weimar Republic, burning it down removed this symbol
