Drugs used to treat bleeding Flashcards
Aminocaproic acid class
t-PA inhibitor
Aminocaproic acid description
synthetic inhibitor of fibrinolysis
Aminocaproic acid mechanism
inhibits activation of plasminogen
Aminocaproic acid indication
Hemophilia
Bleeding from fibrinolytic therapy
Aneurysm bleeding
Post-surgical GI bleed
Aminocaproic acid adverse/contraindications
Intravascular thrombosis HTN, myopathy Abdominal discomfort, diarrhea Nasal stuffiness ****DO NOT use in DIC or upper GI bleeding****
Protamine sulfate class
antidote
Protamine sulfate description
chemical antagonist binds heparin rendering it inactive (lots of arginine gives it a strong +ve charge)
Protamine sulfate indication
Heparin toxicity (UFH) Not effect against fondaparinux
Protamine sulfate adverse
Coagulation if no heparin
Hypersensitivity -> dyspnea, flushing, bradycardia, hypotension
Vitamin K class
Antidote
Vitamin K description
Carboxylates clotting factors
Response is complete in 24 hrs, onset in 6
FFP used for immediate hemostasis
Vitamin K Indication
Stops bleeding induced by oral anti-coagulation (Warfarin)
Hypoprothrominemia in babies
Plasma fractions description
replaces coagulation factors that are dificent in genetic disorders
Plasma fractions indication
Hemophilia A -> PF-8
Christmas disease -> PF-9
