What are the characteristics common to all MAOIs?
A
- Irreversible Flavin inhibitor
- last resort antidepressant
- MOA: down regulate (desensitize) 5HT1A and terminal alpha-2
- dietary restrictions: tyramine containing foods
- contraindications: OTC decongestants, triptan anti-migraine agents, meperidine, tramadol, SSRIs, L-DOPA, bupropion

What are the characteristics of the hydrazines?

- Hepatotoxic

What are the characteristics of cyclopropylamines?
A
- May inhibit MAO reversibly
- Tranylcypromine (Parnate) - amphetamine derivative so stimulant like effects may lead to insomnia and agitation

What are the characteristics of propargylamines?
A
- Selegiline patch - only useful at doses that inhibit both MAO-A and MAO-B
- only antidepressant administered as a transdermal patch
