drugs for parkinsonsim and alzheimers disease Flashcards
(20 cards)
blood brain barrier
endothelial cells in capillary walls in the brain have tight junctures
what is parkinsonism?
slow movement, tremors, shuffleing gait, pill rolling
what causes parkinsons disease?
too much acetylcholine and not enough dopamine
how do you treat parkinsons disease?
give more dopamine
what drug class is carbidopa-levodopa sinemet?
antiparkinson agent
how does carbidopa-levodopa work?
levodopa- converted to dopamine in the cns
carbidopa- gets the levodopa to the brain
does dopamine pass the blood brain barrier?
no
what are some contraindications of carbidopa-levodopa?
closed angle glaucoma, cv disease, hepatic disease, psychiatric disease, peptic ulcer
what interferes with carbidopa-levodopa?
high protein intake, high levels of b6
what are some side effects of carbidopa levodopa?
involuntary movement, mood change, cardiac dysarrythmia, ortho hypo, dark urine or sweat, nausea, vomiting
what are some nursing implications for cabidopa levodopa?
may take 1-4 weeks to work, dont stop abruptley, urine and sweat discoloration is normal, admin with low protein foods
alzheimers disease
incurable dementia
how do you treat alzheimers disease?
increase acetycholene
what drug class is exelon?
acetylcholinersterase inhibitor
how does exelon work?
inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine in the cns but does not cure the disease
does exelon stablalize cognitive function?
yes
what are some contraindicaions of exelon?
urinary obstruction, ortho hypo, bradycardia, asthma, peptic ulcer disease
side effects of exelon?
hepatotoxicity, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, ortho hypo, dry mouth
nursing implications
assiss cognitive function throughout therapy
holistic approach to care
monitor liver function
admin at regular intervals on an empty stomach
should you avoind anticholinergic or dopamine agents with exelon?
antichollinergic
