Drugs for dyslipidemia Flashcards
What drugs fall under the Statin class of dyslipidemia drugs?
Atorvastatin
Rosuvastatin
Simvastatin
Ptavastatin
Lovastatin
Pravastatin
Fluvastatin
MOA of statins?
Inhibitors of HMG coA reductase, decreasing de novo sysnthesis of cholesterol.
First line therapy for reducing LDL
How does Niacin treat dyslipidemia?
inhibits lipolysis of TG by reducing free fatty acid release.
The liver thus produces less VLDL which decreases circulating LDL levels
What drugs fall under the fibrate class of drugs that treat dyslipidemias?
Gemfibrozil
Fenofibrate
MOA of fibrate drug class
Active PPAR-α which leads to an increase in LPL expression
LPL increases fatty acid uptake and thus decreases levels of triglycerides (first line therapy for lowering TG)
Drugs in the bile acid sequestrants (resins) class
Colestipol
Cholestyramine
Colesevelam
MOA of bile acid resins
Bind to bile acids and increase their excretion, which enhances the conversion of cholesterol into bile acid.
The decline in cholesterol stimulates release of LDL receptors and thus increasing LDL clearance
What drug is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor?
Ezetimibe
What drugs are used to treat homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia?
Lomitapide
Mipomersen
PCSK9 inhibitors
