Drugs for CVD Flashcards
1
Q
ACE inhibitors (antihypertensive)
A
- lowers blood pressure by reducing vasoconstriction of blood vessels
- side effects include a cough, dizziness, abnormal health rhythm
2
Q
Calcium channel blockers (antihypertensives)
A
- lowers blood pressure by reducing vasoconstriction of blood vessels by blocking calcium ion influx into muscle cells
- side effects are headaches, dizziness, swollen ankles, abnormal heart rhythms
3
Q
Diuretics (antihypertensive)
A
- lowers blood pressure by reducing plasma volume and increasing volume of urine produced
- side effects are dizziness, tiredness, nausea and muscle cramps
4
Q
Beta Blockers (antihypertensive)
A
- lowers blood pressure by preventing adrenalin from entering the protein receptors on CSM or organs like the heart reducing the strength of the contractions
- side effects dizziness, tirednesses and diarrhoea
5
Q
Statins
A
- inhibits the enzyme involved in LDL production
- improves the balance of LDLs and HDLs
- risks are muscle inflammation and liver damage
6
Q
Anticoagulants (e.g warfarin)
A
- prevents the blood from clotting too easily
- warfarin interferes with prothrombin production
- can cause internal bleeding and death
7
Q
Platelet Inhibitory Drugs (e.g aspirin)
A
- makes the platelets less sticky so reduce blood clotting
- risks are bleeding in the stomach bur risk is less that warfarin
