Primary Hypertension (multifactorial): 
•	Smoking 
•	Obesity 
•	Diet (e.g. salt)
•	Lack of exercise 
•	Genetic 
Secondary hypertension: 
- renal hypertension

What is the NICE guidelines to treat hypertension based on age and ethnicity?

A

Person <55 age:
Step 1: ACE inhibitor or Angiotensin II receptor blocker
Step 2: one of the above with Calcium channel blocker
Step 3: Step 2 + a diuretic like Thiazide
Step 4 (Resistant hypertension): Step 3 + more diuretic or alpha/beta blockers.

Person >55 or African/Caribbean descent of any age:
Step 1: Calcium Channel blocker
Step 2-4 is the same as above.
