Statins
A
A- inhibit HMG CoA, an enzyme involved in making cholesterol. decrease cholesterol produciton by liver and reduce triglycerides and LDLs.
T- take in evening
L- that it is a prophylactic drug
E- headache, GI disturbance. less common are muscle aches and rhabdomyolysis. Rise in ALT
T- ALT at start and then at 3-12 months. TFT
I- any CYP450 inhibitors. (eg amiodarone, dilitiazem, macrolides). can withold statin if short course of this drug. minimise alcohol intake and grapefruit juice.
