Drugs Flashcards
What is Celecoxib?
A COX-2 selective inhibitor
What is Hyoscine?
A non-selective muscarinic competitive antagonist
Used as an antispasmodic
Blocks transmission from vestibular apparatus to the vomiting centre
How does Movicol (Osmotic) work?
Dependent on the metabolism by gut microbiota
What is Pilocarpine?
Muscarinic agonist
Taken orally for dry mouths (xerostomia)
Constricts pupils and smooth muscle
What is Granisetron?
A 5-HT3 antagonist
Action in the chemoreceptor trigger zone and GI tract
What is Nabilone?
A cannabinoid receptor agonist (CB1) in the GI
Used for chemo indecued nausea
What is Metoclopramide?
A D2 (dopamine) receptor antagonist
Action in the chemoreceptor trigger zone and GI tract
How does Racecadotril (Hidrasec) work?
An enkephalinase inhibitor –> Also a pro-drug
Decreases intestinal hypersecretion of fluid and electrolytes
For acute diarrhoea
What is Prucalopride (Resolar)?
A selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist
Promotes motility and mucosal secretion by increasing the ACh release by interneurones in the 2 plexus
What is Bethanecol?
A hybrid of carbachol and methacholine
Used to assist bladder emptying
M3 agonist
How do stimulants, like Senokot (senna) and Ducolax (bisacodyl), work?
By stimulating rectal/colonic nerves
How does Lubiprostone (Amitiza) work?
It is a selective chloride channel activatior
So increases the luminal secretion of Cl-, causing an increase in peristalsis
What is loperamide?
A synthetic opioid agonist
Inhibits motility and secretion
What is dexamathasone?
A corticosteroid
Direct action on the emetic centre
Used in the treatment of chemo induced nausea
How does Bismuth subsalicylate work?
Shows anti-secretory properties
Bismuth part shows some anti-microbial activity too
