Drugs Flashcards
Levodopa/Carbidopa
(Sinmet) - is a precursor to Dopamine and used to treat Parkinson’s Disease
Ropinorole
(Requip) - dopamine agonist and acts as the dopamine receptors in the basal ganglia. Used to treat Parkinson’s Disease
Paramipexole
(Mirapex) - dopamine agonist and acts as the dopamine receptors in the basal ganglia. Used to treat Parkinson’s Disease
Risperidone
(Risperdal) - dopamine antagonist and atypical antipsychotic. Used to treat Huntington’s Disease
Lorazepam
(Valium) a benzodiazepine that is used to take the edge off for some people. Used to treat Huntington’s Disease
Haloperidol
(Haldol) a dopamine antagonist that is used for Schizophrenics. Also an antipsychotic
Phenlephrine
(Neosynephrine) a vasopressor and nasal decongestant. Works at alpha receptors for adrenergic stimulation
Pseudoephedrine
(Sudafed) a vasopressor, bronchodilator, and nasal decongestant. Works at alpha and beta receptors for adrenergic stimulation
Oxymetacholine
(Afrin, Duration) same as Sudafed but longer term. Used to adrenergic stimulation
Prazocin
(Minipress) treats hypertension by decreasing tension of smooth muscle. Works at alpha receptors for adrenergic blockers
Doxazocin
(Cardura) treats hypertension by decreasing tension of smooth muscle. Works at alpha receptors for adrenergic blockers
Tamsulosin
(Flomax) treats hypertension by decreasing tension of smooth muscle. Works at alpha receptors for adrenergic blockers
Propanolol
(non-selective) treats mild to moderate hypertension and works at beta receptors for adrenergic blockers
Esmolol
(B1 selective) treats mild to moderate hypertension and works at beta receptors for adrenergic blockers
Butaxamine
(B2 selective) treats mild to moderate hypertension and works at beta receptors for adrenergic blockers
