What is an anaesthetic?
A drug that renders a patients insensible to stimuli. Medication that causes a loss of consciousness or sensation. Local e.g. lidocaine of general e.g. Propofol
What is an analgesic?
A drug that relieves pain. For example paracetamol or for a stronger effect morphine
What is an anthelmintic?
A drug used to treat worm infestation. E.g. Piperazine
What is an antibiotic?
Used to treat and prevent bacterial infections. E.g. Penicillin. They are not active against viruses
What is an anticoagulant?
A drugs used to reduce the ability of a blood clot. For example, heparin.
What is antiemetic?
A drug given to relieve nausea and to stop vomiting. For example: Metroclopramide and Cyclizine
What is an anti epileptic?
A drugs used to control seizures in epilepsy. For example: sodium valproate
What is an antihypertensive?
A drugs used to reduce blood pressure. For example: Ramipril
What is an antihistamine?
A drug that blocks some action of histamine in the body, treating a number of allergies. For example: Chlorphenamine
What is an antimicrobial?
A drug that kills microorganisms. For example: Vancomycin
