Aminoglycoside

Toxic effects?
** A MEAN-OLD MICEN** - an antibiotic used to treat gram-negative, resistant, serious, life-threatening infections.
* ALL end in MYCIN, but not all drugs that end in MYCIN are aminoglycosides - 3 that arent - AZITHROMYCIN, CLARITHROMYCIN, AZITHROMYCIN - if it has THRO throw it out!
* TOXIC effects - Mice - Ear / Ototoxic. Monitor hearing, balance, tinnitus
Kidney / Nephrotoxicity - Creatinine

2 cases when to give PO?
Who can sterilize my bowel?
Remember 8 - Toxic to cranial nerve 8 / give every 8 hours / give IM or IV
Do not give PO, they are not absorbed
2 cases where we give PO - to get ammonia down. Hepatic encephalopathy & bowel surgery / sterilized bowel
* NEO-KAN!! NEOMYIN & KANOMYCIN
What is TAP?
When do you draw the trough?
When do you draw peak?
Subling?
IV?

Draw Trough, Administer, Draw Peak
Draw Trough 30 mins before next dose
Draw peak
* Sublingual - 5-10mins after dissolved
* IV - 15-30 mins after finished
* IM - 30-60 mins after injecting
* PO - not necessary

* Negative inotropic, dromotropic, chronotropic - like valium for your heart /Slow down
They treat A, AA & AAA.
** A** - antihypertensives / relaxes heart and blood vessels
** AA **- Anti-angina / decreasing 02 Demand
** AAA **- Anti Atrial Arrhythmias /
S/S Headache & Hypotension
* Anything ending in DIPINE + Verapamil & Cardizem (continuous IV Drip)
* Monitor BP/ hold if SYS is under 100
