Drugs Flashcards
Acetazolamide
Inhibit carbonic anhydrase.
Used to treat:
Glaucoma
Edema from HF
Epilepsies
Timolol
Non-selective Beta blocker.
Beta-1 in heart, Beta-2 in the vascular and bronchial muscle.
Treats:
Increased Intraocular pressure
Mannitol
Sugar alcohol.
Osomotic Diuresis.
Propofol
General anesthesia and sedation.
Positive modulation of GABA.
Also used for seizures over 5mins.
Donepezil
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor.
Treats:
Dementia.
Suxamethonium
Succinylcholine
Found on post-synaptic cholinergic receptors.
Prolonging membrane depolarization.
Skeletal muscle relaxation.
used in surgery/tracheal intubation.
Isoflurane
Decreases gap junction opening times and increasing the closing time, reducing conductance.
Inhaled general anesthetic for surgery.
Atracurium
Neuromuscular block.
Relaxes muscles during mechanical ventilation.
Competively blocks cholinergic receptors.
Fentanyl
Mu opioid receptor agonist.
Phenobarbital
Act on GABAA receptors, increasing synaptic inhibition.
Sodium Valproate
Inhibits succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, increases succinic semialdehyde which inhibits GABA metabolism.
Used:
Seziures.
Prophylaxis migraine.
Biopolar disorder.
Lithium
Stimulates NMDA receptor.
Mood stablizer.
Bipolar disorder.
Depression.
Diazepam
Increases inhibitory effects of GABA on various regions of body.
Anxiety.
Alcohol withdraw.
Refractory Epilepsy (refractory = non responsive to treatment).
Lamotrigine
Voltage-sensitive sodium channels, thereby modulating release of excitatory neurotransmitters.
Seizures.
Carbamazepine
Anti Convulsant.
Inhibits sodium channel firing.
Trigeminal neuralgia.
