Drugs Flashcards
1
Q
Morphine, Fentanyl, Sufentanil, & Alfentanil
- What drug class
- Use
- ADE
A
- Opioid
- Use:
- Sedation
- Analgesic to relieve pre-op and post-op pain - ADEs:
- CNS depression, resulting in resp depression or distress
- Delays Awakening following sx/procedure
- Can result in post-op constipation & urinary retention
- Can trigger nausea and vomiting
2
Q
Benzodiazepines
- What are the drugs
- Use
- ADEs
A
- Diazepam
- Midazolam
- Diazepam
- Reduces anxiety pre-op
- promotes amnesia
- produces mild sedation w/ little-to-moderate resp depression w/ careful titration
- Reduces anxiety pre-op
- ADEs:
- cardiac and respiratory arrest
3
Q
Antiemetics
- What are the drugs
- Use
- ADEs
A
- Ondansetron
- Metoclopramide
- Promethazine
- Ondansetron
- Use:
- decrease post-anesthesia nausea & vomiting
- enhances gastric emptying (metoclopramide)
- induces sedation (promethazine)
- decreases the risk of aspiration - ADEs:
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Respiratory depression and apnea (promethazine)
4
Q
Atropine and Glycopurrolate
- What drug class
- Use
- ADEs
- Contraindication
A
- Anticholinergics
- Use:
- Decreases risk of bradycardia during sx due to parasympathetic response to surgical manipulation
- Blocks muscarinic response to acetylcholine by decreasing salivation, perspiration, bowel motility, and GI secretions
- Decreases the risk of aspiration - ADEs
- Urinary retention, difficulty starting urination
- Tachycardia
- Dry Mouth - Contraindicated w/ Glaucoma
5
Q
Phenobarbital and Secobarbital
- What drug class
- Use
- ADEs
- Contraindications
A
- Sedatives
- Use:
- sedation
- induction of general anesthesia - ADEs
- respiratory depression - Contraindicated w/ MAOIs — AVOID giving within 14 days of starting or stopping MAOI
6
Q
Succinylcholine and Vecuronium
- What drug class
- Use
- ADEs
A
- Neuromuscular blocking agents
- Use:
- skeletal muscle relaxation for sx
- airway placement - ADEs:
- total flaccid paralysis
- requires mechanical ventilation b/c it blocks contraction of all muscles, including the diaphragm and resp system
7
Q
Reverses respiratory depression resulting from an opioid medication
A
Naloxone
8
Q
What is administered to reverse effects of a benzodiazepine?
A
Flumazenil
9
Q
What is a drug that treats bradycardia?
A
Atropine ~ anti-cholinergic
