- brush palate daily
- soak dentures in chlorhexidine mouthwash for 15mins 2 x day
- leave denture out as often as possible

alternative to miconazole and fluconazole if contraindicated for fungal infections

1 - salt mouthwash
2 - chlorhexidine mouthwash
3 - local analgesics

first and second line treatment of ulceration
first - salty mouthwash
second - chlorhexidine 0.2%, rinse for 1 min 2 x daily (or hydrogen peroxide 6%)
local analgesic treatment of ulcers
helpful to relieve pain whilst eating or sleeping - not for continuous use
benzydamine mouthwash 0.15%
lidocaine ointment 5%
topical corticosteroid treatment of ulceration
only to be used if mouthwashes and local analgesics not working
beclometasone inhaler - good for isolated and easy access lesions
beclomethasone mouthwash good for widespread lesions
local measures for treatment of dry mouth
frequent sips of cool drinks
suck pieces of ice
chew sugar free gum
what should patients who have a true salivary deficit be prescribed
topical fluoride e.g duraphat toothpaste in addition to saliva substitute/ saliva promoting meds
instruction if prescribing metronidazole
no alcohol for duration of treatment and for 48 hours after treatment complete
