Drug Metabolism Flashcards
What is metabolism
Enzymatic processes that modify the chemical structure of a forgein/ strange molecule making it more water soluble so that it can be Easily secreted by the body
Phase one reactions
Involve transformation of molecules such as oxidation, reduction and hydrolysis to make them more reactive
Phase two reactions
Coupling the drug or metabolite with endogenous polar components , makes it more water soluble so that it can be excreted via the urine.
Role of cytochrome p450 enzymes
They split molecular oxygen. One of the oxygen atoms is introduced into the drug ti produce metabolites and the other ends up in water.
Involves use of NADPH
When an oxidation of carbon atoms happen in p2 metabolism
If the carbon is exposed or activiated
