Drug Interactions Flashcards
Synergistic Effect
Two drugs enhance each other’s effects (e.g., aspirin + warfarin = increased bleeding risk)
Antagonistic Effect
One drug blocks another (e.g., naloxone blocks opioids)
Enzyme Induction
(e.g., rifampin increases breakdown of oral contraceptives making them less effective)
Enzyme Inhibition
(e.g., grapefruit juice inhibits CYP450 enzymes increasing drug levels)
Grapefruit Juice
Increases drug toxicity (affects statins, calcium channel blockers)
Tyramine (found in aged cheese, wine)
can cause hypertension crisis when taken with MAOIs (e.g., phenelzine)
Vitamin K (found in leafy greens)
can reduce the effects of warfarin (blood thinner)
Beta-Blockers & Asthma
Beta-Blockers (e.g., propranolol) can worsen asthma by constricting airways
NSAIDs & Kidney Disease
NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) can worsen kidney function
