Classification by schedule
focuses on potential for abuse and medical use
Schedule I
High abuse potential and no indication medical use
Schedule II
High abuse potential, medical uses indicated with strict parameters
Schedule III
Moderate to low potential for psychological or physical abuse
Schedule IV
Low potential for abuse, low risk for dependency
Schedule V
lowest potential for abuse and dependency
Classification by therapeutic abuse
Focuses on condition or disease the drug is used to treat. Focuses on clinical application of drug
Ex: Antibiotics, Antihypertensives, analgesics, antidepressants
Classification by chemical make-up
Focuses on chemical structure of the drug. Drugs with similar make-up may belong in same chemical class but can have different mechanisms of action
Classification of Mechanism of Action
focuses on how drugs work in the body. Specific biochemical interations through which a drug substance produces it’s intended effect
Ex: Betablockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors
Prototype
Individual drug that represents a group of drugs; sets standard for new drugs
