Drowning / Near Drowning Flashcards
What 4 factors increase survivability?
1) younger the age 2) the colder the water 3) the cleaner the water 4) the less time submerged
What are the 8 parts of the EMT portion of this protocol?
Initial assessment, assess for trauma / c-spine, assess respiratory effort/mental status, place the patient on pulse ox / oxygen, immobilize patient if indicated, continuously reassess respiratory effort and mental status, remove wet clothing and prevent heat loss with dry blankets, monitor for hypothermia.
What are the 5 parts of the Paramedic portion of this protocol?
Consider advanced airway w/ OB tube, cardiac monitor, establish IV of NS, transport, reassess ABCs and vital signs frequently.
Near drowning patients must be transported, why?
Risk of secondary drowning where delayed flash pulmonary edema develops.
What two serious conditions can develop following the inhalation of water into the lungs causing damage to the alveoli?
ARDS and pneumonia
What is important to remember about cold water incidences?
There is no time limit, attempt resuscitation unless injuries are incompatible with life.
Drowning is the leading cause of death among ________.
Would be rescuers.
