Why must you inspect your vehicle before trips?
Federal and state laws require drivers to determine their vehicle safety
During a pre-trip, drivers should watch and check :
Gauges, tires, wheels, rims, brakes, lights, cargo, all connection to trailer .
Tire problems consist of:
To much or little air Bad tread: (4/32 in front, 2/32 for others) Cuts or damage Tread separation Mismatch size
Wheel and rim problems are:
Rust around the nut
Mismatch, bent or cracked
Welded wheels or rims
Bad brake drums or shoe problems are:
Cracked drum
Oily or greasy shoes/ pads
Worn, missing or broken shoes
Steering defects are:
Missing parts
Leaky hoses
Steering wheel play more then 10 degrees
Suspension sys defects are:
Leaky shock absorbers
Damaged air suspension
1/4 or more missing/ broken leaves
What are the three emergency vehicle equipments?
Fire extinguisher
Spare fuses
3 reflective triangles
Before checking engine compartments make sure you:
Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels
How much air pressure should build within 3 mins?
50-90 psi
Idling oil pressure should be:
Between 5-20 psi
To test for hydraulic leaks, you should:
Pump brakes 3x’s, then hold pedal for 5 seconds ( if it moves there’s a leaky)
To test brake stoping action, you should:
Drive 5 mph, push brake firmly and see if it pulls to one side
