General rule to inform DVLA
Disability expected to last more than 3mths
Driving rules angina
No driving when symptoms at rest/emotion, may restart when control achieved
No DVLA notification needed
Driving rules MI
No driving for 1wk if successful angioplasty LVEF>40% + no urgent interventions planned
Otherwise no driving for 1mth
No DVLA notification needed
Driving rules angioplasty
Cease driving for 1wk
No DVLA notification needed
Driving rules dysrhythmias
No driving until 4wks after successful control
Driving rules pacemaker
Stop driving for 1wk
Pt must notify DVLA
Driving rules ICD
Annual review for license
Can drive when:
6mths since ICD for 2˚ prophylaxis, or 1 mth for 1˚
No shock given in past 6mths
No shock in last 2yrs accompanied by incapacity
1mth off driving after any modification of device
Driving rules syncope
No restriction on simple faint
4wks off for treated cardiac aetiology
Epileptic or 2 eps in past 5yrs, must be 1yr seizure free before driving
Single LOC with no cause despite cardiac + neuro investigations = 6mths off
Driving rules TIA
No driving for 1mth
If recurrent + frequent then 3mth attack free may be required
DVLA notifiable
Driving rules chronic neuro conditions
All notifiable to DVLA
Driving rules severe mental disorders
Only drive in dementia if very mild
DVLA notifiable
Driving rules diabetes
Inform DVLA if controlled by insulin/ tablets
Bans if symptomatic with hypoglycaemia/ impaired vision
Driving rules brain surgery/ tumour
Inform DVLA if any severe head injury requiring inpt treatment
Driving rules substance dependance
Inform DVLA if dependence/misuse in past 3yrs
Driving rules visual disability
Inform DVLA if affects both eyes
Do not declare myopia/hyperopia or colour blindness
