Leucht et al
He reviewed 212 studies and found treatment was successful in reducing the symptoms of SZ in comparison to a placebo. This can be given to SZ patients, it is more effective and appropriate to be given to alleviate symptoms.
Both types of drugs bring with them significant side effects.
Tardive dyskenisia- not effective as this will make patients stop taking the drugs, quit, not continue and aren’t suitable. Worsens condition.
Drug therapies are cheaper than hospital treatment
Cheaper than family therapy and cbt, economic benefit as money is saved for healthcare, they can administer themselves and go to work, but there are ethical issue of neglectance as it is a sign of trying to sedate them.
Drug therapies only suppress symptoms and doesn’t Tackle underlying cause.
Effective to an extent, not long term effective, further research is needed.
