dreaming and land right movements Flashcards
Land
Land is the physical median by which dreaming is expressed, as such the land is an integral part of the sacred, spiritual and physical worlds
Land right movement
Aboriginal Land rights movement seeks to secure the inherent rights of Aboriginal Peoples to their land, as “land is mother” and ensure that their spiritual and cultural integrity is preserved. The land rights movement recognises the inextricable connection between the land and the dreaming, aiming to restore spiritual and physical relationship with the land
Mabo case #2
1st time native title was recognised, in which it focused on Terra Nullius, overturning legal fiction that Land did belong to First Nations people as it “grows us up” (Bob Randall, an Elder from the Yankunytjatjara people)
Adani Coal mine
Adrian Burragubba a Warrigan traditional owner actively lobbied against the Adani Coal mine in 2021, emphasising the importance and relationship of land and dreaming in order to keep culture and ancestry alive. He conveys “We are only surviving because we are Aboriginal People connected to land”, highlighting the inextricable connection to land and people, as well as Aboriginal People “come from dreaming”, being here from the “beginning of time”.
