Step One of Drawing Up Medication (3 Checks)
- Check Label
- Check Exp. Date
- Check/Inspect for Discoloration or Precipitation of the Medication
Step Two Drawing Up Medication
Clean top of bottle each time with alcohol swab
Do not touch the bottle after it is cleaned with alcohol
Step Three Drawing Up Medication
Attach and/or tighten the needle onto the syringe
Take the needle cap off the needle
Step Four Drawing Up Medication
Pull back on the end of the syringe of the plunger
Draw air into the syringe equal to the amount of medicine
ex: 1 mL of medicine = 1 mL of air into syringe
Step Five Drawing Up Medication
Place the bottle on the table
Insert needle into the rubber stopper on top of the bottle
Step Six Drawing Up Medication
Inject the air into vial
Invert bottle with the syringe attached
Step Seven Drawing Up Medication
Pull the plunger down allowing the medication to fill the syringe
*slowly and gently to keep from air bubbles
Stop at desired amount
Step Eight Drawing Up Medication
*With needle still in vial
Check for air bubbles in the syringe
Remove the bubbles (thump gently)
Step Nine Drawing Up Medication
Pull down the syringe again and fill the syringe with correct amount of medicine
Check again for air bubbles if present repeat the step above
Step Ten Drawing Up Medication
Remove the needle from the bottle
Carefully replace the needle cap (or place in sharps box)
Step Eleven Drawing Up Medication
Change the needle
*throw away 1st needle in sharps box
Why do you change the needle after drawing up medication?
Dull Needle
Medication could be on the needle or inside the needle
For sterility
