Drawing Graphs Flashcards
What is categorial data?
Categorial data can be best described by a label or category.
What kind of graph would you draw for categorial data?
Bar charts
What is continuous data?
It’s data that’s often a measurement so will contain numerical values and have units
If data is continuous, what graph do you draw?
Line graph or scatter graph
What should the labels for the x and y axis look like?
The label should be of a measurement . And if the measurement has a unit then it needs to have units in brackets next to the label
Every graph needs a title, what does it start with?
A graph to show…
What label do we put on the y axis?
The dependant variable– the thing we measure because of the change made
What label do we put on the x axis?
Should be the thing we change during an experiment (independent variable)
What do we need when we draw a line graph or a scatter graph?
– a title
– axis
– suitable scales
– units in brackets if we have any
– line of best fit
– points should be in crosses for accuracy
What does a line of best fit tell me?
It allows you to see the relationship between the two variables you plotted on the graph. It allow you to see the trend.
What can we use the line of best fit to do? (hint: it’s not to do with the relationship of the two values you plotted)
It allows us to make predictions of values we don’t have. It allows us to make an estimate
If value of y increases as value of x increases what kind of correlation is it?
Positive correlation
If the value of y decreases as the value of x increases, what type of correlation is it?
A negative correlation
What will the graph look like if it has no correlation?
The points will have no pattern and will be scattered
