Dramatic Monologue
The speaker addresses a silent or absent listener, as if engaged in a private conversation. The speaker often reveals his feelings, attitude, motivations, and traits
Ex.)
“The Seven Ages of Man” delivered by a character in “As you like it”
Dialogue
Written conversation between two or more characters
Soliloquy
Is a speech in which a speaker speaks his thoughts aloud.( usually on stage alone, not speaking to other characters or the audience)
Aside
A short speech directed to the audience, or another character, that is not heard by the other characters on stage
Ex.)
Friar Laurence [aside]. I would I knew not why it should be slowed.
Stage directions
Usually printed in italics and are used as a guide to directors, set and lighting designers, performers, and readers
Tragedy
A dramatic work that presents the downfall of a dignified character
Tragic Flaw
a decision that is often an error in judgment on the part of the hero
Act
A major division within a play, similar to a chapter in a book
Ex.)
Act 1
Scene
The action is often divided into acts and scenes. Each scene presents an episode of the play’s plot and typically occurs at a single place and time
Foil
A character who provides a striking contrast to another character
Ex.)
In “Romeo and Juliet”, Mercutio serves as a foil to Romeo
