Dramatic Elements Flashcards
How many dramatic elements are there?
9
Climax
Part of the play where the conflict comes to a head or breaking point. Where our emotions are likely to be the strongest.
Conflict
At the heart of the dramatic action is conflict. Keep the audience engaged and interested in what is unfolding.
Occurs when one or more characters come face to face with an obstacle or challenge that they have to try to overcome. Physical and intellectual conflict.
Contrast (Dramatic Juxtaposition)
Where the playwright puts one character, idea or incident up against another for a dramatic effect. Works best when it involves the protagonist and antagonist.
Mood
The general feeling or atmosphere created in the performance of the play. Many factors can help establish the mood; other dramatic elements, stagecraft elements, the se of expressive skills and performance skills.
Rhythm
Just like a piece of music, each play has its own rhythm. (Eg. Delivery of lines, length of dialogue and scenes, emotional intensity of plot and the transition of scenes)
Sound
The sound produced by a performer not a pre-recorded sound.
Space
How the space is used in a performance to enhance its dramatic quality. (Eg. Theatrical space, theatrical acting space and space between characters)
Symbol
A symbol is something that indicates or stands for something else. A symbol may be an object, a movement, a gesture, vocal sounds, item of clothing, prop, lighting, sound effect or backdrop. Audience has to be able to recognise it. Intended to create a deeper meaning than what appears on the surface.
Tension
A dramatic element that is created on stage and to be received by the audience. Can also be described as suspense as it keeps you wanting to know what’s going to happen next.
