Tableau
An actor/ group of actors (ensemble) freeze on stage to communicate meaning/ story to the audience.
Narration
One or more characters are speaking directly to the audience, telling them the story of the scene on stage (what is happening)
Thought-tracking
A character directly addresses the audience during a scene to express how they’re feeling/ thinking.
Speaking in unison
Ensemble of actors saying the same thing, at the same time, in the same way
Movement in unison
Ensemble of actors doing the same thing, at the same time, in the same way
Dialogue
Words spoken by actors to one another (e.g. a conversation)
Volume
How loud or quiet the voice is.
Clarity
How clear an actor is speaking their lines to another actor / the audience
Tone
How a line is said by an actor to communicate thoughts/ feelings e.g. angry tone of voice, excited tone of voice
Pitch
How high or low the voice is
Facial Expression
One or more characters are speaking directly to the audience, telling them the story of the scene on stage (with their face)
Gesture
Movement of hands, arms or head to show how a character feels or expresses their thoughts.
Posture
How a character stands/ sits to show their age, status or emotional state
Levels
The height of a character in relation to the stage/ other characters. Can communicate status, relationship, thoughts and feelings to the audience
Proxemics (proximity)
The distance between actors, or an actor/s and something on stage. Shows relationship, status or emotions/ thoughts of character.
