Drainage basins and rivers Flashcards
Surface storage
Water stored in lakes, reservoirs or puddles.
Drainage basin hydrological cycle
The cycle of water on a drainage basin scale. An open hydrological cycle.
Soil storage
Water stored in soil.
Groundwater storage
Water stored underground in bed rock.
Throughflow
Water travelling through soil.
Percolation
Water infiltrating from the soil into the bed rock.
Groundwater flow
Water travelling through the bed rock.
Water table
The upper surface of groundwater.
Pipeflow
Where water follows roots of vegetation.
Throughfall
Intercepted water dripping from vegetation to the ground.
Vegetation storage
Water stored in vegetation.
Water balance
Balance between precipitation and evapotranspiration.
Flashy hydrograph
Fast reacting
Subdued hydrogaph
Slow reaction time.
Wetted perimeter
The perimeter of the river that is in contact with the river bed.
Hydraulic radius =
Cross sectional area /
Wetted perimeter
River capacity
The volume of load a river can carry.
River competence
The diameter of the largest piece of load a river would be able to carry at a certain velocity.
Calibre
The size of a particular piece of load.
Rejuvenation
When there is a change in a rivers base height giving the river increased erosive power.
Eustatic sea level change
Sea level changes due to ice sheets forming or melting causing sea level to be lower or higher.
Isostatic rebound
Caused by ice sheets weight, when released the land will rebound upwards.
Dynamic equilibrium
A balance between erosion and deposition rivers are always trying to achieve.
Knickpoint
An irregularity in a rivers gradient between the rejuvenated and unrejuvenated sections of the river.
