Draganski et al (2004) Flashcards
What biblical approach does Draganski et al (2004) fit into?
Neuroplasticity
Aim
Find out whether the human brain can change in response to an external stimulus
Method
- Random smaple of volunteers who cound not juggle
- One group was labelled as the jugglers while the other group was labelled the non-jugglers.
- The jugglers were instructed to practice juggling everyday for three months, while the non-jugglers were insturcted to libe their normal lives.
- At the end of the three months, both groups were instructed to live their normal lives and to not practice juggling for another three months.
- All the participants had their brains scanned before the experiment, after the first three month period and after the second three month period.
Results
The first scan was identical for all of the participants, but the second scan was different in each group. The non-jugglers scans stayed the same, but the jugglers had a large grey mass in the mid-temporal area of the brain. After the second . three month trial the non-jugglers still had . the same brain scans, and the jugglers still had the grey mass, but the amount had decreased significantly.
Findings
This shows the synaptic plasticity of neuroplasticity can be provoked by an external stimulus.
Why neuroplasticity?
The brain changed in relation to the new external stimulus, which is in this case the practicing of juggling everyday.
