Drag Forces Flashcards
What are Drag forces and some examples of them?
Drag forces are the forces that opposes the motion of an object that is moving through a fluid. Drag forces can convert KE into heat and sound energy.
Friction and Air resistance are some examples of Drag forces.
what is the upward force lift ?
lift is an upward force on the object that is moving in a fluid. lift is perpendicular to the flow of fluid.
what are some factors that can affect Drag ?
The speed of an object
The objects shape and texture
The density of the fluid
(The most 2 that affect drag the most are the speed and the cross-sectional area)
what does air resistance increase with ?
Air resistance increases with the speed of an object
How does terminal velocity occur ?
- the weight of the object falling through the fluid will always be constant. weight will be the only force acting on the object, therefore the net force will equal the weight ad the acceleration will equal g ( acceleration of free fall).
- when the object starts to fall through the fluid the weight of it will remain constant, however we will have a drag force acting upward that will keep increasing because the speed of the object is increasing. because our net force is decreasing also the acceleration of the object will decrease and become less than g.
- we will eventually reach terminal velocity, and this is when the drag force equal the constant weight force of the object and we will have zero acceleration due to having no net force and also a constant velocity.
what effect does air resistance have on the horizontal motion of a projectile ?
Air resistance reduces the horizontal component of the velocity of a projectile. This means that we will have smaller max height and smaller range compared to having little to no air resistance .
