Dr. Gegel's Announcement Flashcards
The airway is innervated by what 3 CN?
Trigeminal
Glossopharyngeal
Vagus
The trigeminal nerve (CN V) provides sensory innervation to what?
Face and it divides into 3 branches V1, V2, V3
V1 innervates what?
Nares/septum
V2 innervates what?
Turbinates/Septum
V3 innervates what?
Anterior 2/3 tongue
The glosspharyngeal (CN IX) provides sensory innervation to
Posterior 1/3 tongue, oropharynx, vallecula, and anterior side epiglottis
The vagus nerve divides into what 2 branches?
superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN)
The SLN further divides into what 2 branches?
Internal and External branches
The internal branch of SLN provides sensory innervation to?
from pos side epiglottis to the vocal cords (VCs) with no motor function
The external branch of SLN provides motor innervation to
cricothyroid muscle (tenses the VCs) with no sensory function.
Injury to the SLN may cause
hoarseness, but not respiratory distress
The RLN provides SENSORY innervation to
the larynx below level of VCs as well as the trachea
The RLN provides MOTOR innervation to
all laryngeal muscles except the cricothyroid
Therefore, unilateral injury results in paralysis of the ipsilateral VC ABDuctors where the affected VC assumes the ADDucted paramedian position causing hoarseness, but not respiratory distress.
Bilateral RLN injury results in
bilateral paralysis of the VC ABDuctors, closing the VCs resulting in an airway emergency requiring intubation or tracheostomy
