DQs - Instruments Flashcards
When must an Army Aviator file IFR in a CH-47F?
All Army aircraft that are instrumented for IFR flight and are flown by an instrument rated pilot/qualified operator will operate on IFR flight plans except when:
– Flight is primarily for VFR training.
– Time will not permit mission completion under IFR.
– Mission can only be accomplished under VFR.
– Excessive ATC departure, en route, or terminal delays are encountered.
– Hazardous weather conditions must be avoided.
What are the standards for Task 1170: Perform Instrument Takeoff?
- Comply with appropriate departure procedure
- Maintain climb power, HVR PWR plus 10% (+/- 3%)
- Maintain accelerative climb attitude (not to exceed 10* nose low) until climb A/S is attained.
- At 40 KCAS, adjust power to maintain appropriate climb, as required.
- Maintain the aircraft in trim after 40 KCAS.
A flight weather briefing is valid for how long?
– For all FIR flights and/or VFR cross-country flights, the weather forecast will be void one hour and 30 min. from the time the forecast is received provided the aircraft has not departed. The crew should update weather briefing info. on stopover flights.
– Weather info. will be obtained from a U.S. military weather facility. If U.S. military weather support service is not available, consult DOD and/or U.S. government FLIP for guidance.
Discuss the VOR/TACAN pair/unpair function in the CH-47F.
– The VOR/TCN PAIR function defaults in the active mode. When this function is active, and a new VOR freq. is being entered on the list, it automatically matches the entered VOR freq. to the corresponding TACAN channel.
–Found on the TACAN Control Page, when the pilot sets the VOR/TCN pairing mode to PAIR, CAAS computes the associated TACAN channel based on current VOR/ILS freq.
– If the VOR/TCN pairing mode is set to PAIR and the operator sets the pairing mode to UNPAIR, CAAS retains the current TACAN channel.
What does the operators manual say is needed to fly if Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) exist?
This helicopter is qualified for IMC flight provided the following conditions exist:
– Both DAFCS are operational.
– Both SFDs are operating.
– Three MFDs (1, 4, and either 2 or 3), two CDUs, two GPPUs, two DCUs, two EGIs, and two ADCs are operational.
– Coupled ILS approaches at localizer intercept angles of greater than 60* are prohibited.
Can you use a GPS in IFR conditions as a substitute to an Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) and/or distance measuring equipment receivers?
– WPs, fixes, intersections, and facility locations to be used for these operations must be retrieved from the GPS airborne database, which must be current; if the required positions cannot be retrieved from the airborne database, the substitution of GPS for ADF, VOR, and/or DME is not authorized.
How would a 15 minute holding delay at EDN be entered in the route of flight on the DD Form 1801?
– DCT EDN/D00+15 DCT
While in a holding pattern, what is the recommended wind drift correction on the outbound leg?
– The aviator should compensate for wind effect primarily by wind drift correction on the inbound and outbound legs.
– When the A/C is outbound, triple the inbound drift correction; if correcting left by 8* when inbound, correct right by 24* when outbound.
While flying a coupled ILS approach, the intercept angle for the localizer must be less than how many degrees in order for the mode to transition to an active (captured) state?
– Once the ILS mode is armed, the heading reference must be adjusted until intercepting the ILS localizer signal. A green LOC annunciator is displayed on the MFD.
– Intercept angle must be less than 60* so the mode will transition to the active state.
When using an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) for IFR flight, are you required to have a paper back up? If so, how many EFBs do you need, and if your EFB fails, can you continue flying IMC?
If operating without paper back-ups, a minimum of one EFB per pilot will be carried.
– EFBs shall use the same flight application to facilitate management between pilos.
– If operating in IMC conditions, and either EFB fails, the A/C should exit IMC conditions as soon as practicable until either the inoperable EFB is restored or paper publications are on board the A/C.
