DP #6 Normality and Neurotypicality Flashcards
What is Normality?
Capacity to cope with ordinary demands of life or to think and act in an effective way to achieve goals and meet needs.
What is Neurotypical?
Describes individuals whothink, behave and feel in ways that are typical for most people.
What is Neurotypical brain development?
Expected development of brain structures and neurological connections over time.
What is Neurodivergent?
Individuals who think, behave or feel differently to most other people. Include people with specific neurodevelopmental diagnoses such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and Tourette syndrome.
What is emotional competence?
an individual’s capability in identifying, labelling and managing their emotions as well as understanding the emotional states of others.
What is emotional regulation?
Emotions are maladaptive when they persist beyond when they are needed in a particular context.
Emotion and neurodivergence
Some neurodivergent people have difficulty understanding and expressing emotions, as well as recognising and understanding emotional states on others.
Eg. people with autism
What is typical behaviour?
Is often dictated by the norms of societies and cultures
Cognitive differences of neurodivergent people can include:
- Ability to respond to and learn music
- Very high attention to detail
- Independent thinking
What are cognitions?
It is the neurological connections and the size of some brain structures in a neurodivergent person’s brain can differ from those in the brain of a neurotypical person.
Differences between Neurotypical and Neurodivergent Individual’s
Neurotypical - Able to adapt in changes in routines
- can focus for prolonged periods
Neurodivergent - May is not able to focus for prolonged periods, but is detailed focused
- May experience difficulty in adapting to change
